Dog tetanus disease is an acute, traumatic, toxic infectious disease in dogs caused by Clostridium tetanus. The characteristics of this disease are the main symptoms of the disease.
1. The cause of tetanus in dogs
1. The pathogen is Clostridium tetanus. It is widely found in fertilized soil and dust, as well as in silt and human and animal manure.
2. When trauma, especially after sterilization and tail breakage, wound contamination is most likely to occur due to poor disinfection. 3. The propagates of C. tetanus tetanus are not strong in resistance to physical and chemical factors. They can be killed by boiling for 5 minutes: but their buds have strong resistance.
4. Clostridium tetanus can be killed with 10% iodine tincture, 10010 bleach, and 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.
2. Key points for diagnosis of dog tetanus
This disease is not seasonal, and dogs have a certain resistance to this bacteria. Clinical symptoms of tetanus:
1. Sick dogs usually develop 5-10 days after the trauma occurs.
2. The muscles of the whole body are straight, the gait is stiff, the tail is raised high, and the horn bow is reversely swayed. (Reverse arch: refers to the manifestation of the body tilting backward due to twitching of the back muscles, which is like a bent arch)
3. Typical symptoms are the ears standing up, being together, being stiff, instantly disembarking the membrane, and straightening the limbs. The teeth are closed, the corners of the mouth are suspended, and the face is tightly restrained.
4. Salpitation due to dysphagia, exposed conjunctiva, and facial muscle spasm. Often die of respiratory central paralysis.
III. Prevention and treatment measures for dog tetanus
1. Trauma should be treated in time and tetanus antitoxin should be injected.
2. Carefully care for sick dogs. Symptom-based therapy and sedation and antispasmodic use with magnesium sulfate or chlorpromazine.
3. Treat the right symptoms in a timely manner to recover. Intravenous injection of tetanus antiserum, 100~1000 international units, per kilogram of body weight (IU/kgbw), used 2~3 times in a row.
4. Debride, remove foreign objects, necrotic tissue, blood clots, etc., rinse and disinfect with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, and do not suture the wound. Parenteral fluids should be used for those who cannot eat.
