"Daily Mail" reported that a Manchester United fan was banned by the club for three years for making homophobic remarks against Chelsea.
It is reported that the fan's use of "rent boy", a derogatory term for Chelsea fans, was deemed a hate crime by the British Crown Prosecution Service. This insulting term has been used for decades.
The fan also joked that in a recent game, the on-site staff tried to expel him from the field after he called Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot a "gay XX".
In the screenshot of the club's warning letter posted by the fan, Manchester United stated, "We have recently discovered that you may have breached the official terms and conditions. Specifically, we confirm that you have used homophobic remarks in writing or online against Chelsea and its fans."
The letter added: "The line For violating stadium management regulations and violating the club's official penalty regulations, first-time offenders will face a three-year ban from attending games (covering home and away games)."
Before the game against Chelsea at Old Trafford in September, Manchester United issued a statement warning fans to stop using the slogan "rented boy". The club stressed: "We must make it clear that this kind of chant is offensive, inappropriate and has no place in our stadiums and football." It added that the Crown Prosecution Service and the Football Association have confirmed that the chant is discriminatory and has been classified as a hate crime.
A Manchester United spokesman said: "Manchester United has zero tolerance for any form of discriminatory language and behavior."
It is reported that the fan will be given the opportunity to appeal against the ban.
The Football Association of England has imposed huge fines on many clubs for fans using the "rent boys" slogan in the stadium.
